January is the coldest month of the year in Korea. This month has two seasonal subdivisions called sohan and taehan . They say that winter cold begins around sohan and peaks around taehan , but the weather around sohan that falls on January 6 or 7 is as cold and biting as that around taehan . This year sohan falls on the 5th.
Taehan falls on the 20th or 21st. This year it is the 20th.
Believing that everything is based on farming, Koreans have made steady preparations for farming according to the seasonal characteristics of this month.
During the seasonal subdivisions they liked eating hot dishes such as thojangkkuk (bean paste soup) and jongol (casserole). Particularly, Pyongyang onban was famous for its unique taste. It is prepared by pouring hot chicken soup on the rice topped with mung bean pancake, fried mushroom and seasoned chicken. And then it is garnished with sliced boiled egg and condiments such as spices, sesame mixed with salt and pepper.
Taehan is followed by lunar New Year’s Day. In the lead-up to the day the Korean people keep their houses clean and women prepare dresses and dishes.
This year’s lunar New Year’s Day is January 29. It is one of the most popular holidays in Korea.
It is customary to pay tributes to the ancestors around New Year’s Day.
Yut (four-stick game), seesawing, kite-flying, sleighing and other folk games contributed to stirring up the festival’s atmosphere.
Like this the Korean people have created folk customs appropriate to the seasonal characteristics of this month.
