Last year river improvement projects were pushed forward in different parts of the DPRK.
According to data available, provinces, cities and counties including Pyongyang and Rason cities and South Phyongan, South and North Hwanghae provinces concentrated forces and means on their own projects to complete them in a responsible manner. As a result, every task of river improvement was successfully carried out, and sites vulnerable to flood were removed in many sections.
In particular, Rason dug hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of earth out of riverbeds and reinforced the embankment. Over 15 000 square metres of banks of streams were covered with stone. In addition, a project was conducted to reinforce the embankment in the Tuman River with dozens of weirs installed in distributaries to check flood. This resulted in improvement of rivers and streams in a total of dozens-of-kilometre-long section.
South Hamgyong Province carried out dredging and embankment projects in a scientific way on the basis of a detailed survey of the amount and speed of the flowing water in rivers and streams. And Hanggu District in the city of Nampho built a sluice gate for the embankment of the Taedong River.
Kumchon County of North Hwanghae Province overfulfilled a task of installing a protecting dike in a section of the Ryesong River twice more than planned, making it possible to protect tens of hectares of farmland from flood. Tosan County built a dam in a section of the Rimjin River, which can withstand any flood.
