Onhis way back toPyongyang from an inspection tour of a unit of the Korean People’sArmy in October 1999, Chairman Kim Jong Il arrivedat the foot of Tongjom Pass and had a rest with officials.
At that time, a processionof people appeared on the pass.
An oldman was driving anoxcartloaded with bundles of wood, women were carrying knapsacks filled withwild fruits and baskets on the head and children were laughing merrily.
After looking at them fora while, the Chairman told the officials tolook at them carefully as they represented the true looks of the Korean people whowere on the Arduous March, noting they showed no sign of tiredness butthey werewalking with a powerful gait. Andhe continued to say smilingly:
As I look at them, I feellike seeing the people who live while keeping in theirmind the Party’s slogan, “Let us live not merely fortoday but for tomorrow!”, and the indomitable persons of strong faith whoare determined to live onstaunchly while believing in our Party only,not yielding to hardships.
Weshould go onwith journey, however arduous itmay be, if it is for the people. Let’s cross allthe highandrugged passesofthis country for the people—this is my willand conviction.
Timepassed and it was time to leave the place.
As he approached his fieldcar and grasped thedoor handle,the Chairman proposed keepingthe place inmind, saying thatit was a place where they had a short rest during theArduous March, nay, a place where they gainedfresh strength from the looks of the people scaling the hill of hardshipwith great confidence.
Then he got into thecar to resume his journey.
