March 21 is the International Day of Forests.
A session of the UN General Assembly held in 2012 instituted March 21 as the International Day of Forests with an aim to raise global awareness of the importance of protecting the natural environment and forests, a precious asset indispensable for human life and socio-economic development.
The forests, which account for about one-third of the world’s landmass, perform a variety of functions such as provision of material wealth to mankind, prevention of flood, landslide and erosion of land, and enrichment of biological species.
Besides, they play a pivotal role in preventing global warming, a serious global issue.
However, many parts of the world are being severely deforested due to different factors, causing grave challenges to the development of human society.
Destruction of forests is as stark as never before.
Damage caused by forest fire is also very severe. In recent years, large-scale forest fires have occurred in Europe, Americas and other regions, cutting a wide swathe through forests.
The dramatic decline in forest resources stimulates the desertification process, which causes lots of pains and losses to human life and economic activities.
Amid the growing importance of afforestation, many countries are conducting various activities such as tree-planting campaign and photo exhibition on the occasion of the International Day of Forests every year.
In the DPRK where mountains occupy most of its territory, afforestation efforts are pushed ahead with as an important policy of the state.
Every year good tree species which are of economic value and suited to the climatic and soil conditions of relevant regions are widely planted to spruce up the appearance of the land.
Moreover, positive measures are taken by different sectors to reduce their dependence on forests.
The international efforts to protect forest resources are increasing day by day.
