Among the 24 subdivisions of seasons used by the Korean ancestors are mangjong and haji, the subdivisions of June.
Mangjong falls on June 5 or 6 of the solar calendar and haji on June 21 or 22.
This year, mangjong fell on June 5 and haji falls on June 21.
Mangjong means harvesting barley and transplanting rice seedlings.
Haji means the summer solstice, the day of the year with the most hours of daylight, and the shortest hours of night.
Haji is an important period for annual farming in view of both the season and the farming process.
In this period, rice transplanting was usually done and cocoons were picked.
The Korean people prepared different kinds of foods according to the subdivisions of seasons in June.
As June is a month for the growth of many wild vegetables and the harvesting of vegetables, they prepared delicious foods with various kinds of wild vegetables, cucumbers and other vegetables.
The foods made of mugwort were mostly prepared in all regions.
Typical of the foods is rice-and-mugwort cake.
As balsam blossoms are in full bloom in the season, girls liked tinting their nails with the petals.
