The Haeppal Peak volcano is one of the geological sites in the Mt Paektu area registered as a global geopark.
The volcano, 2 719m above sea level, is the second highest peak of Mt Paektu.
After the formation of the Pukphothaesan Member by trachyte and trachydacite to the height of 418 metres above the surface of Lake Chon, small explosive and effusive eruptions took place alternately 11 times, to create a stratum with a thickness of 107 metres, which was overlaid (to a thickness of 2-5m) with white pumice layer.
The vent of the volcano is near the summit of the peak. At this site there occurred an eruption of liparite lava rich in volatile elements, which flowed down along the southern slope of Mt Paektu; even today, as many as 17 flowing patterns can be found on the ridge of Haeppal Peak.
During the stage of the collapse of the Mt Paektu volcanic body after the Millennium Eruption, the part of Haeppal Peak facing Lake Chon was separated down, producing a steep cliff.
The volcano is of significance in the study of the flowing characteristics of liparite lava and the transformation of landform after the Millennium Eruption of the Mt Paektu volcano.
