The tennis group of Sinwon Senior Middle School in Pothonggang District, Pyongyang, attracts attention of experts.
They made their successful debut in the tennis event of the national schoolchildren’s games held last year, by bagging four gold medals, five silver medals and eight bronze medals in the team, singles and doubles events.
This success, in spite of the short history of the group, is associated with Ri Yong Sik, a sports teacher of the school.
It was two years ago that he started his career as a sports teacher of the school after a stint in a sports club.
When he was appointed to the school, he decided to run a tennis group in the school and formed it with students with suitable constitutions.
At first he focused on training the group members through matches rather than giving them basic training though their performance was still poor, with an ambitious plan to train them as soon as possible.
This approach brought the group a disgraceful defeat in the match against a team.
Thus, he changed his tactics to making the group members well-versed in basic skills such as racket holding, posture, movement and stroke.
And he helped them cultivate the ability to promptly and accurately judge and respond to the ever-changing ball movements, while applying training methods suited to the psychological characteristics and physical constitutions of students.
Meanwhile, he frequently organized matches against other schools to foster their courage.
This led to a gradual improvement in their sense of competition, and proactive judgement of situation and bold ball handling.
They gave full play to their skills at last year’s national competition.
Ri Yong Sik said that he would strive for consecutive victories in the future.
