Among the cultural heritage of the Korean nation is Koryo brass mirror showing the nation’s refined metal workmanship.
The nation’s metal workmanship, which had been partly represented by mirror with the fine thread-patterned back since the period of Ancient Joson (early 30th century BC—108 BC), came to prominence in the period of Koryo (918-1392).
For example, brass mirror made in this period was famed for its various shapes, refined patterns and fine metal workmanship.
Such mirrors have been unearthed mostly at tombs or sites of royal palaces and temples.
Most of their shapes are round but some are rectangular. There are also rectangular or octagonal mirrors with their edges rounded off. In addition, there are rare ones that look like pot, bell and gourd and have even a handle.
The back of the mirrors is decorated with different patterns, mostly representing animals, plants, landscape and structures and partly showing dancing or hunting.
Mirrors are delicately embossed with beautiful lines and patterns suited to their shapes, adding more to their artistry.
Among the mirrors are those with no patterns and with inscriptions.
These mirrors showcase excellent metal workmanship and formative and artistic talent of the Korean people.
