Mangyongdae is where President Kim Il Sung (April 15, 1912-July 8, 1994) was born and spent his childhood.
The historic place, located in the DPRK’s capital city of Pyongyang, has long been renowned as a scenic place for its beautiful hills and rivers.
The highest hill in this region is Mangyong Hill. The name Mangyong means commanding a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding areas.
And the village nestled at the foot of the hill has been called Mangyongdae.
Hwaunjip, a collection of poems and articles published in the 18th century, included the picturesque scenery of Mangyongdae in the ten famous scenes in Hwachon.
The most striking among the ten famous scenes is Mangyongdae in spring which is reminded of a beautiful flower garden.
Other famous scenes are moonlit islands that look like silver plates glittering against the waters of the Taedong River flowing around Mangyong Hill, mountains boasting unbending and animated spirit, idyllic valleys where calves are grazing, people engaged in fishing and sowing seeds, etc.
Each of the ten famous scenes is distinctive and inclusive enough to deal with the spiritual world of the local people and their ennobling way of life.
Hwaunjip and other old records claim that the mountains and rivers in the area of Pyongyang are without exception beautiful and that the landscape in the area of Hwachon is matchlessly beautiful and no other area in the country can be compared with Mangyongdae.
Many poets spoke highly of the exquisite landscape of Mangyongdae.
The place draws an endless stream of Koreans from all walks of life including young people and foreigners as the native home of Kim Il Sung is preserved there in its original state.
