Others’ Experiences Adopted to Meet Specific Conditions

In recent years the Kalma Offshore Farm has annually increased output by more than two times.

The farm, built by Kangwon Province several years ago, boasts favourable conditions for cultivation in light of quality and depth of water.

At first, it raised mussels and Undaria pinnatifida (a kind of seaweed) together, but the result was not so good. Some seed ropes had immature mussels or were bereft of seaweeds although the station had all necessary equipment and adopted others’ good experience.

Analysing the reason, the officials and technicians of the station came to the conclusion that they failed to pay due attention to the yearly-worsening abnormal climate and their possible consequences and blindly copied others’ experiences rather than introducing advanced technologies to cope with them.

They drew lessons from the failure and separated the cultivation area into two parts for the mussels and seaweeds, on the basis of the real-time measurement of its marine conditions.

In addition, they adopted an active method designed to dip the seed ropes to a certain degree or lift them for more sunshine in case the temperature of sea water is higher or lower than normal level and it rains heavily.

Meanwhile, the station, in close cooperation with Wonsan University of Fisheries, developed and introduced an efficient underwater monitoring apparatus.

With such efforts progressing one by one, its output began to increase. Now they are raising trepang as part of mixed farming. While taking others’ experiences into consideration, they have introduced an innovative method. Namely, they release the young trepang. When they grow to a certain size, they collect them to increase their weight artificially.

Now the station applies new technologies to create hundreds of hectares of cultivation ground.
