The Phyongchon District Combined Tailor Shop in Pyongyang is known for its good cut in chima (skirt) and jogori (jacket), the traditional Korean costume for women.
Women of different ages visit the shop to see tailors Pae Chun Bo and Ri Ye Song, who are mother and daughter.
Pae Chun Bo was awarded the best prize at last year’s autumn clothes show, and Ri Ye Song at this year’s spring event.
It was not until Ye Song attended kindergarten that Pae Chun Bo decided to have a shot at the traditional women’s wear. At the time the kindergarten was preparing for an artistic performance by kids in celebration of a national holiday. As a child, Ye Song was so fat that it was hard to buy a ready-made one fit for her. So Pae made order to a tailor shop.
Later, when she visited the shop to get the clothes, she found it unappealing. She told tailors what she was dissatisfied with and asked them to retouch it.
The finished clothing was admired by many when the girl in it appeared on the stage.
After that, Pae began to learn how to make the traditional costume.
She always read books to obtain a wealth of knowledge about the traditional attire.
Sometimes she visited tailor shops to study the features and merits of the traditional clothes and get the knack of design and cut.
In the course of this, she realized that it is important to achieve the harmony of colours and patterns among others in designing chima and jogori and that she had to start with design.
But it took her a lot of effort to complete a design.
She delved into the colours and patterns traditionally favoured by Korean women and modern styles.
On holidays she kept close tabs on the traditional wear of passing women in streets, and visited clothes shows to keep abreast of latest styles.
In this way she expanded her horizons and polished up her cutting skills.
In particular, she embroidered beautiful patterns to add more to the gentleness and elegancy of chima and jogori .
Influenced by her mother, Ye Song has also specialized in making the traditional costume, and she now works with her mother at the Phyongchon District Combined Tailor Shop.
“I fell in love with the traditional costume for its elegancy, and I love my job,” said Pae Chun Bo. “I’ll work to make more pieces with national flavour and modern taste.”
