“As you know, what matters in business is to get more profits at lower costs,” says Choe Song Il, an official of a branch of the Hungsang milch cow farm of the South Hamgyong Provincial Rural Economy Committee, while talking about his business experience.
The branch operates a cultivation ground with an area of about 300m 2 which yields a large amount of highly nutritious barley shoots.
Barely shoots contain much more crude protein than barley and maize, and they are acknowledged as an ideal fodder for grazing animals such as milch cows and goats.
Choe says that every year they cultivate barley shoots enough to feed cows in the branch farm, adding that the output is equivalent to that produced in tens of hectares of field.
In the cultivation ground, barley shoots are grown to meet standards within a week.
By contrast, it usually takes them about a month in outside conditions to reach the level.
The cultivation ground consists of 1 000 trays, each of which produces 6kg of barley shoots out of 1kg of seeds.
Outdoor cultivation requires more farm machines and lots of manpower for land preparation, sowing and other farming procedures. And considerable effort is consumed to harvest and transport.
But now three employees are working at the cultivation ground that turns out the same amount of feed as those produced in tens of hectares of field in the past.
They grow and harvest barley shoots in a rotational way to feed cows all the year round. As a result, the digestibility of cows and milk production have been enhanced. Previously, the farm fed the cows a mixture of cereal straw and ensilage in winter.
