Pyongyang, November 22 (KCNA) -- A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea Friday released the following press statement:

A "resolution" distorting and fabricating the human rights situation in the DPRK was railroaded at the Third Committee of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly on Nov. 21.

The DPRK Foreign Ministry brands the farce of adopting of the "human rights resolution" led by the U.S. and its followers as a grave politically-motivated provocation encroaching upon the dignity and sovereignty of the DPRK, and strongly denounces and rejects the farce.

Not content with branding the DPRK's exercise of its legitimate sovereign rights to defend its security and people's interests as "human rights abuses", the U.S. and its followers took issue with the legislative measures to defend our sound culture and ethics from the U.S. and the Western corrupt and immoral cultural poisoning. This is a wanton violation of the basic spirit of the UN Charter whose core is the respect for sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs of countries.

We express serious concern over the fact that the practice of adopting of resolution at the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly is turning into a political means for interfering in the internal affairs and damaging the image of independent and sovereign states which are raising voices of concern about the unethical atrocities of the U.S. and the West.

Taking ourselves of this opportunity, we again call attention to the fact that the UN whose original mission is to promote reconciliation and unity among countries is being abused as a tool for confrontation to trample down the dignity of sovereign states and stamp out their sovereignty by the U.S. high-handed and arbitrary practices.

The behavior of the U.S. and its followers who are abusing the universal concept of human rights and international human rights norms for attaining their sinister geopolitical purposes while inciting the inter-camp confrontation, a direct product of the Cold War way of thinking is now acting as a harmful factor challenging the aspiration and efforts of the international community for the protection and promotion of genuine human rights.

It is an insult to the inviolable human rights that the U.S., the chieftain of institutional human rights abuses fostering serious and widespread violation of human rights stunning the world, arbitrarily judges and slanders the human rights situation of sovereign states with its yardstick of human rights.

No matter how the hostile forces may be the master of confusing right and wrong and hatching plots, they can never cover up the true human rights situation in the DPRK which gives top priority to the dignity, right and interests of the popular masses and regards them as absolute.

Protection of human rights apart from the national sovereignty is nothing but an empty talk.

It is an exercise of the normal and legitimate right of a sovereign state which no one can slander for the DPRK to take all necessary measures for defending its sovereignty and protecting the security and interests of its citizens as it has been exposed to the serious, political and military threats by the U.S. and its allies.

The DPRK will never overlook the daily-increasing hostile acts of the U.S. and its followers but make every effort to defend the socialist system of the DPRK which its people value as dear as their lives and their genuine rights. -0-
